Hey there! Let’s chat about something super important: sunscreen! This is especially crucial if you’ve had electrolysis treatments.
Did you know that up to 90% of UV rays can sneak through clouds? Plus, they can bounce off surfaces like snow, ice, sand, and water, so you can get burned just as badly as if you were in direct sunlight. Because the ozone layer is getting thinner, it’s more important than ever to protect your skin year-round, no matter your skin type—even if you don’t usually burn!
Here’s a fun fact: UV radiation is the main culprit behind facial aging, and around 90% of skin cancers come from sun exposure. So, lathering up with sunscreen is essential! Regularly using sunscreen can help you with more than just avoiding sunburn; it can:
- Keep your skin tone looking even
- Slow down those pesky wrinkles and keep your skin smooth
- Set a great example for your kids about caring for their skin!
When choosing a sunscreen, remember that a higher SPF isn’t a huge leap in protection compared to a lower one. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is your best bet, as it shields you from both UVA and UVB rays. Look for ones packed with vitamins like E and C—Vitamin E helps protect against UV-induced DNA damage, and Vitamin C offers extra shield against sunburn.
Here are some friendly tips for using sunscreen effectively:
- SPF 50 blocks about 96% of UV rays, while SPF 100 only adds a little more protection (about 98%).
- Reapply every two hours, and try to do it before you head out in the sun!
- Moisturizers and foundations with SPF aren’t the same as sunscreen. They’re fine for quick trips, but for longer sun exposure, go for dedicated sunscreen.
- Don’t forget to protect your whole body! Your lips and ears need love too—choose a lip balm or lipstick with SPF 30 or higher.
- Just because you’re wearing sunscreen doesn’t mean you can sunbathe all day!
- Always check the expiration date! Sunscreen without one usually lasts about three years, but that can be shorter if it gets too hot.
So, let’s make sunscreen a regular part of our routine and keep our skin happy and healthy!
